AfriAlliance Project

AfriAlliance is a 5-year project funded by the European Commission under the Framework of Horizon 2020 aiming to facilitate the collaboration of African and European stakeholders in the areas of water and climate innovation, research, policy and capacity development in order to enhance the preparedness of Africa for future Climate Change challenges., human, environment and political challenges

The main objective of AfriAlliance is for African and European stakeholders to work together in the areas of water innovation, research, policy, and capacity development in order to increase the preparedness of Africa for future Climate Change vulnerabilities.

AfriAlliance is built on the existing networks in both the EU and on the African continent, dealing from different angles with issues related to water and climate. The project consolidates these existing initiatives and networks of scientists, decision makers, practitioners, citizens and other key stakeholders into an effective, problem-focused knowledge sharing mechanism via an overall coordination platform - the Africa-EU Innovation Alliance for Water and Climate.

WaterNet is the leading partner for Work Package 3 which specifically aims to facilitate knowledge sharing and technology transfer in online and offline environments and events for African and EU stakeholders in water and climate. Activities being done under the objective include a series of brokerage events, annual innovation bridge events, trainings, seminars and running Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).


BRECciA Project

A 4 year project titled Building Research Capacity for sustainable water and food security In drylands of sub-saharan Africa (BRECcIA) is funded by the Research Council of the United Kingdom (RCUK) under the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) programme. BRECcIA comprises 6 Universities located in 4 countries (Malawi, Kenya, Ghana and the UK), as well as partnerships with 8 international organizations and is being led by the University of Southampton, UK. The main project focuses on climate change and its social and environmental impacts on water and food security in the drylands of Ghana, Malawi and Kenya; and on building research capability and capacity in those countries.

The overall objective of the proposed work is to strengthen research capacity and capabilities in institutions in three SSA countries to carry out impactful research that leads to positive policy/practice change for sustainable water and food security, and to ensure that this capacity is sustained and propagated throughout and after the project.

One of the specific objectives is to facilitate sustained research capacity within partner institutions after the end of the project and to provide opportunities to self-propagate capacity to a broader set of institutions and researchers across Africa. WaterNet falls under two Work Packages, WP1 which deals with Research Development and Implementation, that is co-development of research questions and programmes through the series of workshops, exchanges, and internships; and WP4 which is on Collaboration, Network Building and Sustainability. This WP will expand the existing bilateral partnerships to a multi-lateral network across all institutions, and facilitate collaborative multi-disciplinary work through south-south and north-south networking opportunities and ensure interactions between universities and centres, and complementarity with existing national/regional strategies. The 7 year project is on Enhancing Water, Food and Energy Security in the Lower Zambezi, with the main aim being: Improving water management in the Lower Zambezi basin by enhancing knowledge on the water resources of its mostly ungauged tributaries (SDG6)

The latest innovations in remote sensing and ground observations are used in improving the knowledge on hydrological processes and water use in this semi-arid tropical region, with the aim to improve the science-based management of the basin. The approach is bottom up, in that stakeholders actively participate and contribute to the success of the project and the anchoring of the outcomes in society, providing practical tools to manage the resources. If the research is well anchored and formulated jointly with the stakeholders, then it can become a powerful vehicle for a much larger research and capacity building programme of which the outcomes are likely to be implemented by the partners, and WaterNet as a capacity building organisation, will take the active role in this field.
